Recently I've got an idea to organise Heroes Tournament, though I'm quite aware that there are several in progress, but perhaps there will be a room for one more. :) My first concern was to avoid mistakes and negative points connected with this event and that's why I have asked opinions of the players how do they think the ideal tournament must look like on my Message Board. Those posts have been collected for more convenient viewing on the special page. You can read them there and if you want to add anything please feel free to do this directly online.

If you like strategy games, and incidentally see Heroes of Might and Magic III by the New World Computing of 3DO in a computer games shop, and do not know is it good or not, and is it a wise idea to spend money on it; I hope very much that the information provided on this site would help to clear any of your doubts about this game. My dearest wish is that more people would find this game and like it, and enjoy it as much as myself and many others who play it and live in it.

From my point of view, Heroes of Might and Magic III is one of the best among strategy games. It takes you inside, in this wonderful world of heroes, mighty creatures and magical spells where you can forget for a minute or an hour, or a day about your real life with all the problems and troubles and completely relax after the hardworking day in the role of the mighty strategist of your own armies.

The main characteristic of Heroes of MM is the deep variety of actions. Everything depends of your own moves, of your own strategy, that's why how many players of Heroes, so many are playing strategies. You can choose your own style of playing, find your favourite town and creatures, select your heroes, and what they would learn and what path you prefer to explore - might or magic.

Heroes is a complex world with a lot of events going on, with multitude of people, races and creatures. It has even it's own evil aliens - the Kreegans!
You can be an explorer or builder, you can defend your territory or attack your neighbours, you can have complete freedom of actions. Nobody would tell you how to spend money or where to find them - you decide everything, you can capture a gold mine from a neighbour, or raid the Dwarven Treasury. There are many opportunities in the game and it would take many days to explore everything. Be sure, Heroes will give you surprises every time you play it, as it isn't the one-pass-and-forget game. It is like chess, eternal, and ever new.

The most important things in Heroes are heroes themselves and towns.

Every hero is unique with his/her specific characteristics, that not only determine the basic intial skills and might/magic orientation, but the development of the hero and the four primary statistics (Attack, Defense, Spell Power, Knowledge) further in the game. All heroes could learn and use magic, but some of them are adepts in it while others are better in hand-to-hand fighting, some are specialists in specific creatures or skills, like Scouting or Logistics, Estates or Sorcery, Leadership or Luck.

The world of magic includes four primary schools of four basic elemental planes: Fire, Air, Water and Earth. Each book has a lot of spells, some are easy, others are so complicated that only the experts in the skill of Wisdom can learn them. But you could be very lucky and find the ancient artifact of the magical book with the complete set of spells for one or other plane.

Artifacts play an extremely important role in the game as they can raise one or all four primary statistics, can increase your Luck or Morale, can permit you to Fly or Walk on Water as on soil, can blow extra wind at your ships sails, or give accuracy to your archers, can teleport or resurrect your troops and many other things. In Heroes III it is even possible to create special, extremely powerful combined artifacts with never before known abilities.

The world of Heroes has many diffirent towns and each one is completely diffirent, though there are basic structures in every town: Town Hall, Citadel, Tavern, Castle, City Hall, Capitol, Mage Guild, Blacksmith, Marketplace. But all others are unique for every town type of which it is 8 altogether (9 with Conflux in the Armageddon's Blade expansion for Heroes III). Each town has its own inhabitants and home terrain.

You can have:
~ Tower, the town of Wizards, with its snow covered mountain peaks and powerful Mages, Genies and Titans;
~ Stronghold, the town of the Barbarians in wasteland with Wolves, Orcs, Goblins and Behemoths;
~ Rampart, the green town of Elves in the deep woods with the Pegasi, Centaurs, and Unicorns;
~ Dungeon, the underground castle of the Warlocks with Minotaurs, and Black Dragons;
~ Necropolis, the town of the Undead where bells are always ringing for new souls and Ghost Dragons protect the black realm;
~ Inferno, the town of Devils, eternal invaders and oppressors;
~ Conflux, the strange town of Elementals and Phoenixes;
~ Castle, the town of humans with the Crusaders and Champions.

Whoever from the heroes or whatever from the towns you choose to play with , the game will be a challenge and only you can decide how to beat it.

However, the advises could help you to survive and prosper in the world of Heroes of Might and Magic, and that's why the special
Manual for the Beginners
was written - to share my experience of many years of playing the game with those who just begin to explore the game.
